Top Ten Things I've been Thinking about Lately

1. We've been watching a video in World Views that's basically against the whole "green movement". They consider concern over global warming, growth hormones in cows, etc, all to be foolish. This bothers me, because even though I'm not sold out on the fact that global warming is dangerously changing the environment, I'm very conscientious about eating lots of foods with growth hormones and pesticides. This doesn't mean I won't touch something that's not organic, but ever since seeing how the body reacts to artificial ingredients (in Anatomy and Physiology class), I try to avoid foods laden with chemical alterations. It just seems simple that the most basic and natural would be the most healthy. However, where do we draw the line between obsession and responsibility? Many people in my class agreed with the video, making comments like, "well, since earth isn't our permanent home, it's ridiculous to get caught up in worries about maintaining it." True, but isn't that an easy way out of our responsibility to be stewards?

2. For the first time, I'm reading a book that is written entirely in poem form. I thought I'd be bothered by it, but each time I open the cover I'm surprised. It's absolutely beautiful. Even if I didn't like the story, I'd still like reading it, just to get lost in the author's lovely language. "Aurora Leigh" by Elizabeth Barret Browning, is definitely worth checking out.

3. Running feels good. I've been trying to go jogging on a pretty country road everyday, and the simple pleasure of it never ceases to make me happy about life.

4. I'm almost finished with my 4Th high school journal. Every year I fill a book with drawing, pictures, scraps, and lots of thoughts about what mattered that school season. Occasionally I look over old books and feel embarrassed about the things I thought and did, but I'm never throwing them away.

5. Restoring old things should become a therapeutic technique. Lately I've been interested in making useless things pretty and functional. For instance, I recently pulled an old wooden step ladder out of the garage and scraped it, sanded the surface, pulled old nails away from the legs, and painted it pale yellow. It makes a great night stand in my room and is exactly the look I want. Working with my hands makes me feel good for some reason.

6. The last few weeks of high school are weird. Half of me is dying to graduate and has lost all interest in doing homework. The rest of me is dreading having to say goodbye to friends and good teachers.

7. I'm actually excited for harvest this year. Weeding fields and spending hours on the combine aren't sounding completely wretched. I think the dark nights that smell like cool air and earthy grass make up for the boring times. I've been trying to learn more about agriculture, because the process of farming is actually pretty interesting. Plus, I'm broke, and what other job offers 14 hour days?

8. I despise getting crossword puzzles and word finds as homework. I'd rather clean the school bathrooms than do busy work. That's really saying a lot, by the way.

9. I've discovered how much I love Tazo Tea. The "Passion" flavor is my favorite. I could live on the stuff.

10. This was supposed to be a "Top Ten List", but number ten just isn't coming.

I have journals and diaries dating back to my grade school years, and they are all horribly embarrassing to look through. I also have all the stacks of notes that Eric and I passed each other when we were high school freshmen. Those are even dorkier. Eric refuses to re-read them. But there's such a sense of history there, I just can't bring myself to toss them.

Also, your stepladder/nightstand sounds really neat. I've been looking for a nightstand for my room. Too bad I don't have an old stepladder. Or time to refinish it if I did. (I currently have about half a dozen other pieces of furniture that would be so cool, if only I ever got around to refinishing them).

Enjoyed reading your list.

And I agree with your conclusion in #1. In fact reading the book Heaven by Randy Alcorn is causing me to enjoy life on this earth all the more while also anticipating eternity with a new joyful fervor.

It is not a simple as dismissing the earth as "not our permanent home." We were created for life on earth and the Bible speaks clearly that there will be a new heaven AND a NEW earth! We sure aren't going to save the earth, but dismissing it is not right either.

Thanks for your comment on my blog!

Loved your list. I hate reading things I wrote in past also. :)

Surely there is a balance, like you mentioned, to appreciating and taking care of the earth as God's creation without loosing sight of heaven!

I love love love Aurora Leigh. I almost named one of my daughters that name and never ever have come across someone who has read it...
