Last Day

My car is so full of papers and books and dirty laundry that the only seats that are available are the driver and passenger side. Speak of laundry, it's covering the floor of my room too. My locker has mold growing. My binder is so full of notes and papers that I'm pretty sure it might explode soon.

Yes, my life has been busy and full lately. Last weekend was the school play ("The Importance of Being Earnest"- I'll write about that later), and this week has been finals. As I was driving home from school today, I realized with surprise that today was my last full day of highschool. Tommorow our class just has to finish up a few finals and turn in our books, then it's off to the senior trip.
The last 4 years went insanely fast and were really fun...which is easy for me to say now that I've taken my last anatomy and physiology test.

Top Ten Things I've been Thinking about Lately

1. We've been watching a video in World Views that's basically against the whole "green movement". They consider concern over global warming, growth hormones in cows, etc, all to be foolish. This bothers me, because even though I'm not sold out on the fact that global warming is dangerously changing the environment, I'm very conscientious about eating lots of foods with growth hormones and pesticides. This doesn't mean I won't touch something that's not organic, but ever since seeing how the body reacts to artificial ingredients (in Anatomy and Physiology class), I try to avoid foods laden with chemical alterations. It just seems simple that the most basic and natural would be the most healthy. However, where do we draw the line between obsession and responsibility? Many people in my class agreed with the video, making comments like, "well, since earth isn't our permanent home, it's ridiculous to get caught up in worries about maintaining it." True, but isn't that an easy way out of our responsibility to be stewards?

2. For the first time, I'm reading a book that is written entirely in poem form. I thought I'd be bothered by it, but each time I open the cover I'm surprised. It's absolutely beautiful. Even if I didn't like the story, I'd still like reading it, just to get lost in the author's lovely language. "Aurora Leigh" by Elizabeth Barret Browning, is definitely worth checking out.

3. Running feels good. I've been trying to go jogging on a pretty country road everyday, and the simple pleasure of it never ceases to make me happy about life.

4. I'm almost finished with my 4Th high school journal. Every year I fill a book with drawing, pictures, scraps, and lots of thoughts about what mattered that school season. Occasionally I look over old books and feel embarrassed about the things I thought and did, but I'm never throwing them away.

5. Restoring old things should become a therapeutic technique. Lately I've been interested in making useless things pretty and functional. For instance, I recently pulled an old wooden step ladder out of the garage and scraped it, sanded the surface, pulled old nails away from the legs, and painted it pale yellow. It makes a great night stand in my room and is exactly the look I want. Working with my hands makes me feel good for some reason.

6. The last few weeks of high school are weird. Half of me is dying to graduate and has lost all interest in doing homework. The rest of me is dreading having to say goodbye to friends and good teachers.

7. I'm actually excited for harvest this year. Weeding fields and spending hours on the combine aren't sounding completely wretched. I think the dark nights that smell like cool air and earthy grass make up for the boring times. I've been trying to learn more about agriculture, because the process of farming is actually pretty interesting. Plus, I'm broke, and what other job offers 14 hour days?

8. I despise getting crossword puzzles and word finds as homework. I'd rather clean the school bathrooms than do busy work. That's really saying a lot, by the way.

9. I've discovered how much I love Tazo Tea. The "Passion" flavor is my favorite. I could live on the stuff.

10. This was supposed to be a "Top Ten List", but number ten just isn't coming.

Writing Prompt: "Describe one of your favorite Spring memories"

Last year my friend and I took a seventh period weight training course. I loved it at first, but after missing a month of school due to mononucleosis, I became extremely weak. It took most of my energy just to walk across the parking lot to the weight room, so actually lifting was almost impossible. My friend didn't have another partner since most of the class was boys, so she lost interest as well. We spent most of our time talking or pretending to look productive.

Each Spring, East Linn's campus suddenly turns yellow with hundreds of daffodils. I look forward to it every year, but somehow the abundance of pretty flowers seems to happen overnight and I'm always surprised. Anyway, it must have been one of the first days that the daffodils were in bloom, because my friend and I were craving to pick big bouquets for ourselves. When seventh period rolled around, we we couldn't stand the temptation anymore so we snuck out of weightlifting and spent a glorious 45 minutes picking daffodils. I'm not sure why it was so fun, but sitting in big clumps of yellow flowers made us giggle for the entire time. I remember laying back in the tall grass and staring at the sky, my stomach aching from laughing so hard. The teacher never found out, or if he did, he didn't care.

Yesterday I was walking across the parking lot and happened to notice the field of daffodils. It was raining and the flowers really weren't in bloom, but I had to smile a little.

Sometimes It's Hard to Understand

You can pray for this family. I was friends with the girl throughout elementary school, and her dad just passed away. Saying "this happened for a reason" really doesn't seem to be the answer right now.
